Instagram is now implementing a feature that sets new accounts for users under the age of 16 to “Less,” the most restrictive setting for Sensitive Content Control. Teenagers who already use Instagram will receive push notifications “encouraging” them to choose the heavier filtering on what the algorithm displays to them across Search, Explore, Hashtag Pages, Reels, Feed Recommendations, and Suggested Accounts.
Instagram’s “Standard” setting limits the amount of sensitive content users may view; the “Less” and “More” options further impose restrictions, respectively, while the “Standard” setting permits users to view only a limited amount of sensitive information or profiles. Teenagers presently only have access to “Standard” and “Less,” although users over the age of 18 normally have access to “Standard,” “Less,” and “More.”
Instagram first debuted its “Less” option in June. After a week, it started rolling out a feature that suggests to teenage users to check out other information if they spend too much time on one particular issue and avoids subjects related to appearance comparison.
Additionally, Instagram is exploring teen-oriented prompts that advise them to restrict who can interact with their material. These teenage users will be required to examine privacy and security settings for things like who may message them, who can re-share their information, what kind of content they can read, and time management.
In July 2021, Instagram’s “Sensitive Content Control” function went live. Users were not allowed to view any potentially hazardous or “inappropriate” content presented to them on the Explore page thanks to the filter. The tuning made to the algorithm has increased in significance as Meta/Instagram ramps up suggested material in response to TikTok’s growth.
Since individuals may be banned from the feed of suggestions if their accounts or content were flagged, the function was opposed by many in the art world, sex industry, tattoo industry, and cannabis sector. Instagram outlines what it considers to be sensitive content in the Help Center, including posts that feature violent imagery, are sexually explicit or provocative, or advertise controlled goods and narcotics.
Other features on Instagram that are geared toward offering a secure experience have recently been added by Instagram. Parental controls, which enable parents and guardians to keep an eye on what their children do on Instagram, including how much time they spend using the app, were added to the site in March.
