What To Know Before Upgrading To iPhone 14 Pro Max From 13 Pro Max

Sep 13, 2022 ,

Apple at its recent fall product announcement introduced its iPhone 14 line-up, (iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max), with all the phones adorned with 6.1 inches display or more.

One of the notable highlights of the unveiling was the removal of the iPhone Mini from Apple’s 14th generation iPhone line-up, effectively signalling the end of the smaller-sized phone.

The iPhone 14 should be ideally an upgrade of the iPhone 13, but this piece will be comparing the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max as there no significant differences between the iPhone 13, 14 or 14 plus barring minor software upgrades.

Unfortunately for African’s, the 14 Pro Max is at the moment available to Americans and can only be gotten only first in American stores when it begins selling. Another point to note is that the 14 Pro Max only uses an e-SIM, not yet widely used in Africa.

It then connotes that Africans may have to shelve their immediate plans to trade off their existing iPhone in exchange for the 14 Pro Max pending the release for global international versions.

So what exactly are the differences between the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the 14 Pro Max?  We will highlight some of them in this article.

Launched at an Apple event on September 7, 2022, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has some exciting new features that may make it worthwhile for iPhone enthusiasts.

The 14 Pro Max surely improves on the already impressive features of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the quick comparison between both is hinged on data collated from Apple’s official specifications at the launch.

Price Comparison

The current price of the iPhone 13 Pro Max which is pegged at $1,099 is the starting price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, putting rest to earlier rumors that the iPhone Pro models will come with a $150 price increase. There may be a slight difference though as  the final retail price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max price may be more than the above outside the US after delivery and tax fees are added.

Camera

Apple, with the introduction of the new iPhone 14 Pro Max has now ditched the use of 12MP sensors for their primary cameras, effectively replacing them with 48MP sensors that give higher-quality photographs. The company says that the new photonic engine technology of the device was mooted to further enhance picture quality regardless of how dark the place it’s taken is.

For video recording capabilities, the iPhone 14 Pro Max truly has an upgrade over the 13 Pro Max, as the new model has the capacity to record footage in cinematic mode (for shallow depth of focus) at up to 30 frames per second in 4K HDR. In the same vein, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max  is laced with a new “Action Mode” that allows users record films with fast-paced action.

This connotes in essence that the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers a superior photography experience compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Design And Display

Even though the 14 Pro Max and the 13 Pro Max in outward design may be identical with its rounded corners, together with a large, 6.7-inch screen, the first notable difference is the replacement of the smaller notch on the older versions with a cylindrical cutout in the top centre of the iPhone 14 Pro Max screen.

Dubbed the ‘Dynamic Island’ by Apple, the rectangular cutout has been animated in the iOS in such a way as to allow alerts and status indications float up on the screen. The cutout also houses the camera sensor arrangement on the screen.

Just like the 13 Pro Max’, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is laced with a 6.7-inch OLED screen but its display is designed in such a way as to continuously stay on, that is, it has an always-on feature.

This affords users the opportunity to flaunt the colourful lock screen of their iPhone 14 Pro, while they explore the flexibility in the latest version of iOS to customise their screen.

The 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max though have similar adaptive refresh rate, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a big upgrade as it can move between 120Hz down to 1Hz as against that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max which can only move between 120Hz to 10Hz.

Colour Variants

iPhone 14 Pro Max, affords users the option of choosing between the familiar Graphite, Silver, and Gold, as well as the brand new Deep Purple colour, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max do not have the  blue and green colour selections for the iPhone 13 Pro Max available.

Performance

There is a very significant improvement in the iPhone 14 Pro Max chips as it has a A16 Bionic chip, over the A15 Bionic chip of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Some of the new changes are listed below:

  • A 6-core CPU with 2-speed cores
  • Four efficiency cores,
  • A 5-core GPU
  •  A16-core Neural Engine.

The Chipset of the iPhone 14 Pro Max uses a 4-nanometer technology as against the 5-nanometer technology of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The corresponding list of features of the new iPhone 14 Pro Max invariably shows that it would be speedier and powerful than the 13 Pro Max.
